Sky Digital

Sky Digital paved way for a new home viewing experience, by providing a much greater choice of channels available.

Sky not only provided fantastic digital television, but also introduced the new satellite mini-dish which ended the cosmetically unfriendly ad bulky satellite dishes, and provided more discreet installations on each property. The service provided has increased dramatically since it's debut, and has taken the United Kingdom by storm.

The service on offer from Sky Digital provides home entertainment for everyone, with a variety of digital channels including entertainment, comedy, drama, sci fi, movies, sports, music and radio stations, not forgetting many channels for the children! The service is currently unrivalled with the amount of channels available, and Sky continuously make improvements to the service, and introduce new technologies which only increases it's appeal.

Since the launch of Sky Digital, Sky+ has been introduced as the next step forward in home recording, designed to provide customers with a digital recorder built into their Sky satellite receiver. The system is designed to allow the viewer to watch one programme, all whilst recording another, ensuring they never miss their favourite tv shows again. The system can also be pre-programmed to record entire series, episodes or movies whilst away from home.

Sky+ also introduced the pausing of live TV, so when you are unexpectedly disturbed, you can simply pause the channel you are watching, and press play when you are ready to continue. Handy for when people knock at your door!

Sky+ was a major step forward for the home entertainment industry, but then came along Sky HD, incorporating all the benefits and recording facility of Sky+, but in glorious high definition, providing much more detailed, crisper and colourful images. The Sky HD satellite receiver is also produced in stylish black, making it a modern home accessory.

Sky has changed the way we watch TV, and with approximately 95% coverage of the United Kingdom, it is easy to see why it is so popular.

Freeview

In 2002, a new television service was launched, which was to change the face of terrestial television for many years to come!

Freeview, was launched to provide a much greater variety of channels, in digital, for free! Freeview currently boasts approximately 50 free tv and radio channels, which are provided in digital with greater picture and audio quality, and for those home viewers who like their entertainment and quiz shows, it provides the functionality of interactive tv, allowing you to take part in your favourite television programmes!

Freeview only requires the installation of a digital tv aerial on your property, and a digital freeview receiver. Most modern televisions are already built with a digital freeview receiver within.

As Freeview does not require any form of satellite dish, it could provide a superb alternative for those wishing to switch onto digital, as opposed to both the BBC Freesat and Sky Digital satellite systems.

For those who want a little bit extra, Freeview does also provide a selection of premium digital channels for a small monthly fee, but remember, you will require a digital freeview receiver with a viewing card slot to unlock these channels. Most televisions do not have this functionality.

As the UK switches over to the new digital signal, Freeview is currently available to many households (approximately 75%) in the UK, so why wait until 2012 when you could benefit from more channels with no monthly subscriptions!

Aerials & Satellites are committed to helping the UK switch onto digital, and are digital tv aerial and satellite tv specialists. For further information, or free advice, do not hesitate to contact us on 0800 0224421.

BBC Freesat

The UK TV viewing market has gone wild in recent months, with the launch of the new service from the BBC & ITV, commonly referred to as BBC Freesat. The aim for the product and service, is to provide superb digital viewing for many households across the UK, for FREE. Furthermore, as the service is provided via a mini satellite dish (alike Sky Digital), the service can reach many more customers in the UK, as opposed to the Freeview service which currently serves approximately only 75% of the country.

BBC Freesat currently provides 80 digital channels which does include some radio and music channels, and it has been announced, that by 2009, upto 200 digital channels will be available through the service, again, all with no monthly subscription.

BBC Freesat also boasts a number of channels in High Definition, which provides much greater detail and picture quality, with more vibrant colours, again with no monthly subscriptions! In order to watch the channels available in HD, you will need a compatible HD BBC Freesat receiver, and a HD compatible television.

The
BBC Freesat system is a great alternative to the Sky Freesat system, as although there is currently less channels available, the Sky Freesat does not provide any form or HD viewing. Furthermore, BBC Freesat are due to launch a new satellite receiver which will incorporate both the HD technology, and complete with full recording facilities, allowing you to record your favourite programmes direct to your receiver, without the needs for any VHS/DVD equipment! This again, will combat the current Sky+ system on offer from Sky.
